Welcome to the new Talk London

After a few surveys, several rounds of user testing and a discussion with some sneak peeks of our new designs, we’re very happy to welcome you to the new Talk London!

The platform is still in beta version, which means that it is not the final version and more edits and updates will follow.

Our old platform last got a make-over in 2017 and the technology it was running on needed a full upgrade. We used the opportunity to make improvements based on your feedback.

What’s new?

  • A fresh design, but we kept our familiar pink colour as so many of you told us you liked that.

  • Big consultations are now gathered on an ‘issue page’, where you can read more about the background, see the different stages in the timeline and find all the related surveys and discussions together. This was a new feature a lot of you were keen to see.  The page you’re on now is an issue page, and going forward this is how we’ll present our work.

  • Lots of you told us you don’t always comment on our discussions, so we’ve created new and easy ways to have your say. To show your support for another member’s comment or idea, you can now click the little arrow to ‘upvote’ it or click the heart icon to show you care.

As always, your feedback is very welcome! It will help us improve Talk London over the next few months, as we continue to shape our new platform.

What do you think of our new online community platform? What features are you most looking forward to use?

Tell us in the discussion below.

Hi everyone

Thank you for all your helpful comments to improve Talk London.

Together with our developers we’ve worked hard to address your feedback, and will continue to do so over the next months.

Here are some of the new features:

- Many of you wanted to see more comments displayed on discussion pages so we’ve increased the number of comments you can see per page to 20.

- You’d like to have options to better browse and search discussion threads. We’ve now added a filter so you can choose how to display all comments. We’ve also included a new search function which allows you to search the comments for keywords.

- Some of you reported issues with unclear password requirements. We’ve made sure password requirements are now clearly displayed and we've improved our password reset process.

There’s a lot more to come and we’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, please keep sharing your thoughts here. For any issues with your account, just contact us (https://www.london.gov.uk//about-us/contacting-city-hall-and-mayor-5/ta…) and we’ll get back to you soon.

The survey related to the budget is too broad brush and effectively of little use. It is too complicated an area to ask for 3 top concerns. Everything is a concern and Londoners would want as much as possible to be improved across the board...

The survey related to the budget is too broad brush and effectively of little use. It is too complicated an area to ask for 3 top concerns. Everything is a concern and Londoners would want as much as possible to be improved across the board. This is always going to be restricted by money and the effectiveness and efficiency with which it is spent.

Some early (but which?!) comments on this Discussion eg 2 years ago, are obsolete, so shouldn't leave up as live, but e.g. mark as such.

Glitches:

My initial comment on Budget Discussion showed up immediately, then later had gone, then back again!

Also, just possibly related, the page number at bottom doesn't always change correctly.

2000 chars seems a bit long for making 1 point.

It's not explained that there's no apparent limit to number of comments on a Discussion you can make, to encourage a single point per comment, so that reactions are more precise.

Most posts only have 1 upvote/heart - likely the person doing it on their own post, which is allowed!

Avatar for - Adelie penguin

& each one generates an email, claiming that another user has reacted to a comment of mine, even though it was me! 🙄

What's difference between upvote & heart?

(1 post on budget Discussion only has upvote button!)

Doesn't say we can experiment with them because they are self-cancelling if press again .

Is there limit to number of posts a user can react to? Per Discussion, or total across site?

Ironically, this post now (half hour after posting it) doesn't have an upvote button, though it did as soon as I'd posted it!

Oh - now it's reappeared!

Hello and thank you for all your feedback.  We'll share this with our team.

We'd like everyone to feel welcome to get involved in a constructive way on Talk London.  There's no limit to the number of comments you can make or react to. Our community guidelines do discourage the use of repetitive language and comments.

The upvote and care button are additional ways to get involved in a discussion.  You can click the green arrow to show support or the heart icon to show you care.

Thanks for taking part. We hope to see you online in the new year too!

Site is still bitty, confusing, & assumes users ha e experience with various such platforms already.

Many aspects don't explain themselves.

This Discussion has been taken over by general policy points, with no pushback.

Surely clearly off-topic posts should be removed to a general Discussion?

Let people look at the whole of other people’s comments. Allowing 2000 characters but only showing 100 odd is pointless.

Hi BrixtonLambeth98. Welcome to Talk London and thank you for feedback.

Members told us that they had to scroll too much to get through all the comments, especially on mobile phones. We've tweaked how comments are displayed, with the option to click 'Show full comment' to read more.

We'd love to know more about your experience using the site.  Our latest member survey takes about five minutes to complete.

How is going to that members survey different from what this Discussion is supposed to be for?

Hello!

Please can all golf courses in and around London be made available to the public for 2 days a week so everybody can enjoy those green spaces too to do other things like have a picnic, play football, give their dogs a nice space to run about it. It is not fair if certain green areas are used only by golfers throughout the week. The green spaces in London are needed by everyone in the city to relax in.

I think a fun sharing scheme would be good but I think dogs would mess up the greens for the golfers and it wouldn't be off to the best start.

Could we have council tax reductions for all residents who are looking after gardens front and back please. There could be a discount based on how many square metres of garden people are looking after.

Hello,

There are lots of walls that are 100% brick in London. Can many of them be covered with trellises and plants eg climbing plants, to help clean the air and make the place look nicer?

Also that way a football match/other sport match could be organised next to the pub in the park everyday and anyone wanting to join in could just add their name to a list, sit on the bench of that team and put a vest on and play for 20 minutes for that team while everybody watches and supports the teams instead of people staring at a lot of screens. This way more people would get to play sports together.

Hello,

There needs to be a board/space to comment on any issue facing people in London.

People in London are not very friendly and social, they are not good hosts. They hardly ever keep their homes clean and tidy enough, they should all be keeping at least the sitting room and a guest toilet and garden in order for guests and friends. People should not be thinking the homes they are staying in is just for them to stay and enjoy.

ALL should be bothering to at least invite a friend for a tea or coffee every now and again if they cannot manage to prepare a lunch or dinner or BBQ.

Gardens are so empty of people having a nice party together. It is very sad.

People in London are very much strangers and acquaintances who cannot be bothered to play host, does someone know why?

BUILDINGS IN LONDON ARE FAR TOO COLD IN THE WINTER MONTHS!!!

CAN PEOPLE PLEASE KEEP THE ROOM TEMPERATURES AT 20 DEGREES CELSIUS FROM OCTOBER TO APRIL IN LONDON!!!

People are wearing winter jackets and coats indoors throughout the winter in London as buildings are really not kept warm enough. That includes cafes, restaurants, English language schools, homes etc.

There is central heating but people are not turning the heating on for some reason. Please can all these places be kept warm enough for everybody to help prevent colds and coughs, flus, respiratory problems etc from people feeling too cold.

It is really not acceptable that the buildings are so cold. People should all be able to take their jackets off when indoors. and feel comfortable enough to write and study/teach without their coats, scarves, hats and gloves on.
