Improving academic literacy and writing within and across subject disciplines.

Academic excellence in subject teaching – Fetch Me a Pen

Fetch Me a Pen supported academic literacy and writing in secondary schools, initially in Tower Hamlets. The project focused on a core group of 20 teachers, aiming to increase their subject knowledge and confidence to be able to identify and explicitly teach academic writing in their own subject. It aimed to improve teaching methods within schools and achieve a higher standard of literacy and writing skills across the curriculum. Colleagues worked together to create, trial and evaluate teaching methods appropriate for their different school contexts.

The project supported teachers through workshops and events showcasing strategies and resources they could use in their classrooms. In July 2015 a learning and innovation conference was held with over 100 colleagues from schools across London attending to learn about Fetch Me a Pen. A website sharing knowledge was also launched. www.fetchmeapen.org

Over 500 KS3 and KS4 students took part in the project. There was an overall increase in their knowledge, skills and confidence around writing. There was a particular benefit for disadvantaged pupils.

I’ve taught Science for 5 years but students’ use of language (in both oracy and writing) is something I’ve never thought about. Now I do.
