Question
Political statements and culture funding
Recent requests made under the Freedom of Information Act by the trade union Equity revealed that the ongoing situation in Gaza was discussed in a meeting between Arts Council England (ACE) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which led to ACE updating its guidance to say political statements could break funding agreements. How are you ensuring that cultural projects you fund are allowed a full range of political expression?
Answer
I have joined the international community in calling for a ceasefire and an immediate cessation of the conflict in Gaza and Israel. I know a lot of Londoners have been impacted by the awful loss of life we have witnessed, and I share in that pain, too.
My teams collaborate closely with partner organisations and fund projects that champion equality, diversity and freedom of expression. Supporting equality, diversity and inclusion is a core value for me as Mayor and for the Greater London Authority. Partner organisations must act in accordance with the related terms upon which the funding has been provided
