Summer investigation - Funding the Metropolitan Police

• The Metropolitan police service has made over £600 million of efficiency savings since 2013 and is being asked to make another £400 million by 2020-21.
• The Met has outsourced most of its back-office functions.
• The Met has released over £1 billion by rationalising its buildings and selling excess properties, such as Scotland Yard.
• The Mayor’s strategic target of 32,000 police officers has not been reached for over five years.
• The Mayor has said that London is set to lose a further £184-£700 million next year when the Police Funding Formula is changed.

The Budget and Performance committee is investigating the funding for the Metropolitan Police service. We will be asking whether or not the Met has the resources to keep London safe and deliver the Mayor’s Police and Crime Plan.

We will be asking these key questions:

• Have funding reductions reduced the Met’s ability to tackle crime?
• How would the Met cope with further cuts in the future?
• Why is the Met underfunded for its role policing an international capital city?
• Will the Met still have 32,000 police officers in the future?
