London Art Trail needed in the capital

The Government estimates that creative industries generated £126bn in Gross Value Added to the UK economy and employed 2.4 million people in 2022.

Despite this, many of London’s famous works of art are concentrated in central London and there is a lack of art in outer London.

The London Assembly has today called on the Mayor to commission a London Art Trail across the 32 London boroughs, with an artist, school or youth club contributing one piece per borough.

Lord Bailey AM, who proposed the motion, said:

“London is an international tourism destination, and we are very lucky to have a world-class creative industry that benefits the economy both locally and nationally. I want to bring those industries, and those tourists, to Outer London and I hope that this art trail will be the vehicle for doing that.

“Let’s get families, schools, youth clubs, local artists and creatives involved in decorating and celebrating culture around all 32 London Boroughs, and get tourists out to see every corner of our amazing city. I am delighted that the Assembly has backed this motion and now the Mayor must commit to bringing this creative diversity to the whole of London.”

Anne Clarke AM, who seconded the motion, said:

“I am proud to support this motion for a London Art Trail, which would showcase the rich and diverse creative talent found across all 32 boroughs.

“Art has an incredible power not only to enrich lives but to drive local tourism and stimulate economic growth.

“Creating a London Art Trail would give each borough a unique artistic landmark, encouraging residents and tourists alike to explore all corners of our city. It’s an initiative that would build on the London Borough of Culture Programme, strengthen community ties, and offer new opportunities for local artists and young people to make their mark.

“We urge the Mayor to commission this trail and help bring London’s creative energy to every borough.”

This Assembly recognises that art plays a vital role in enhancing the experience of tourists and has a significant impact on the tourism industry.

From historic landmarks and architectural marvels to museums and galleries, art not only enriches the cultural appeal of a destination but also contributes to its economic growth.

Despite this, many of London’s famous works of art are concentrated in central London and there is a lack of art in outer London.

This Assembly notes that there is a need to commission a London Art Trail which will see all of London’s 32 boroughs connected. This will build on the London Borough of Culture initiative and an art trail would further encourage local tourism and bolster economic growth in outer London boroughs.

The trail should provide an opportunity for schools, youth clubs, and local artists to play a role in implementing such a historic piece of culture across the whole of London.
