The Mayor’s London Basketball Taskforce
The Mayor of London is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative to grow the game of basketball in the capital.
Building on the sport's rising popularity, the Mayor has launched a dedicated Basketball Taskforce to elevate the sport's profile, secure major events, and create positive opportunities for young people across London.
Key objectives
The Basketball Taskforce brings together experts from sport, business, culture, and government to deliver on several key objectives:
- Grow London’s basketball scene
We are focused on developing pathways for emerging talent, enhancing local infrastructure, and promoting the sport’s influence beyond the court—including its impact on fashion, lifestyle, and culture. - Attract major basketball events
We aim to secure world-class basketball events, including NBA games, FIBA competitions, and 3x3 Basketball. We’ll also identify emerging opportunities to host new and exciting basketball experiences in the city. - Create positive youth opportunities
By developing grassroots programs, we hope to not only promote basketball but also support youth safety, employability, and overall wellbeing.
Aims
As part of the Mayor’s commitment to expanding the reach of basketball, Sadiq Khan has pledged to attract more NBA games and activations to the city. Following discussions with NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum, this taskforce will lead the charge in making London a global hub for basketball.
With over 1.5 million people playing basketball weekly across the UK, the sport has rapidly grown to become the country's second most popular team sport. This taskforce aims to build on that momentum by:
- boosting access to basketball across London
- attracting high-profile events such as live NBA games and FIBA tournaments
- developing pathways for local talent
- engaging young people through the sport.
Get involved
The Mayor's Basketball Taskforce has been established to develop a comprehensive strategy for basketball development across London.
As we work towards our goals of securing world-class basketball events, enhancing local infrastructure, and developing pathways for emerging talent, we need your voice and expertise to help shape our recommendations.
Your opportunity to influence the future of basketball in London
We're currently conducting research to understand the current state of basketball across London, and we want to hear from you. Whether you're a coach, player, volunteer, club representative, venue operator, local authority officer, or simply passionate about basketball, your insights are crucial to our work.
We will be conducting a number of listening exercises including surveys, community events and focus groups starting this summer.
Our Call for Evidence is now live and provides an opportunity for anyone involved in London's basketball community to share their experiences, challenges and ideas. The survey covers key areas such as: community infrastructure, events, youth participation and progression. Your responses will directly inform the final recommendations.
We are particularly interested in hearing voices from all forms of basketball within the city, from women’s, men’s, seniors, wheelchair and adapted basketball, EDI-focused teams, 3x3, social teams, youth organisations, facilities managers, and any other participant groups.
Please take a few moments to complete the Call for Evidence online.
The survey will close on Friday 15 August 2025.
Following on from the Call for Evidence, this summer we'll also be launching further targeted surveys designed specifically for different parts of the basketball community. These surveys will help us gather detailed data on facilities, participation levels, barriers to growth and opportunities for development across London.
The Mayor’s Taskforce secretariat team will be delivering a variety of in-person engagement opportunities throughout Summer 2025. All engagement opportunities will be published on this webpage.
If you have any further comments, questions, or ideas, please do not hesitate to reach out via [email protected].
