The London Fire Brigade (LFB) declared a major incident during an extreme heatwave in the summer which led to hundreds of fires across London.
The Brigade said July 19 was its busiest day since World War II, with 2,670 calls taken in one day. More than 40 houses were destroyed by grass and open land fires.
Spells of sustained hot and dry weather in the summer are expected to occur more frequently due to climate change.
What were the key challenges when dealing with a large number of grass and open land fires?
Does the Brigade have sufficient resources to respond to multiple incidents should there be a similar heatwave next year?
The London Assembly Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the Brigade's response to the summer wildfires, and its Q1 performance report for 2022-23.
The guests are:
- Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Smith, LFB
- Tim Powell, Director of People, LFB
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 19 October 2022 from 2pm, in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
