Writing a CV and personal statement

You'll need to submit an up-to-date CV and a personal statement when applying for roles at the GLA. We suggest that your CV is no longer than two pages and that your personal statement has a maximum of 1500 words.

Your CV is the first thing an employer sees about you. Here are some tips to help you make a great first impression.

  • Spend time to get your CV right.
  • Read the job description and show the employer how you can add value.
  • Tailor your CV to the job giving clear evidence as to why you meet the requirements.
  • Be honest, stick to facts.
  • Keep it brief, ideally no more than 2 pages.
  • Use a simple layout and make your headings bold so that they stand out.
  • Always proof read and spell check before sending.

How to write a personal statement

A personal statement is a great way to sell your skills and show how good you would be for a role. It is an opportunity to describe how you match the skills and experience the recruiting manager is looking for. This can be especially useful if you need to show any transferable skills. You can use examples of your experience and knowledge gained from your current and previous employment, voluntary work, education, leisure interests and any other activities you consider relevant to the role.

Your personal should be no more than 1500 words, so avoid listing your role duties and responsibilities, as this should be covered in the employment history section of your CV.  When showing how you meet the essential requirements as outlined in the job advert make it clear what you did, using ‘I’ not ‘we’.  Be clear, concise and don't forget to check your spelling and punctuation.

Deadline for applications

All job vacancies will close at 23.59 on the closing date (given on the job advert).

Please make sure you give yourself enough time to complete and submit your online application form before this closing time as we cannot accept late applications.
