Saturday night fever – London’s night-time economy
London’s night-time sector plays a vital role in London’s economy, with one in every four pounds being spent between 6pm and 6am.
However, the sector was hit hard by the pandemic - the value of consumer spending in the sector dropped by 46 per cent between 2019 and 2021.[1]
While the sector has showed signs of recovery since the pandemic restrictions were lifted, the cost of living, inflation and Brexit means the sector continues to face challenges ahead.
This is further compounded by what appears to be a long-running trend of night-time leisure venues, pubs and restaurants closing across the UK. Figures show there were approximately 3,000 nightclubs in the UK in 2005, as of 2023, this number stood at 851.2]
The London Assembly Economy, Culture and Skills Committee will meet tomorrow for the first of a two-part investigation into the state of London’s night-time economy, and how much progress has been made with the Mayor’s 24-hours London vision.
The guests are:
- Michael Kill, Chief Executive, Night Time Industries Association (NTIA)
- Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive, Heart of London Business Alliance (HOLBA)
- Joan Moynihan, Executive Director, Nimax Theatres
- Simon Tracey, Group Chief Executive Officer, Broadwick Live
Panel 2: 11:30-13:00
- Prof. Ben Campkin, Professor of Urbanism and Urban History, University College London (UCL)
- Sophie Brownlee, External Affairs Manager, Music Venue Trust (MVT)

The meeting will take place on Wednesday 24 July 2024 from 10am in the Committee Rooms 2 & 3 at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.
