Sydney Russell School and East London Science School

A grassroots network of teachers aiming to boost uptake and performance in physics, by deepening immersion in subject knowledge.

The Physics Factory

The Physics Factory aimed to increase student engagement with physics through supporting students and their teachers. The project has created a hub network that focuses on bespoke CPD support for physics teachers and more inspirational approaches to the subject.

In total, 154 teachers in 44 schools from 11 London boroughs have registered as part of the Physics Factory, reaching at least 4620 students.

There has been an increase in the interest and enthusiasm of participating teachers to teach physics. The subject knowledge of participating non-specialist physics teachers has improved. Teachers are increasingly aware of new approaches to the teaching of physics and are more confident in those areas addressed by the project’s CPD.

We already had some network links. Physics Factory is better in many ways - more flexible, more bespoke - e.g. we had separate aims for technicians, teachers and pupils. Physics Factory met them all. Our Academy link person from Newham is now starting to get involved himself. This will help us more.
