London West Alliance: EAL in the Mainstream Classroom

A suite of teacher training programmes to enhance teachers’ language skills to provide more focussed classroom provision for EAL learners.

EAL in the Mainstream Classroom

Lampton School led the project, in partnership with Hounslow Language Service, to develop a suite of high quality, affordable, school-led training programmes for teachers to improve the use of EAL strategies in mainstream classrooms. Capacity was built within the system by developing a Train the Trainer programme so that other delivery centres could offer the same high quality affordable training.

The project focused on; the development of classroom practice for EAL pupils, the creation and testing of differentiated classroom resources, an online bank of those resources, and, providing tools and strategies to improve leadership of learning, particularly at Levels 2 and 5.

The importance of Teaching Assistants in improving EAL pupil’s language skills in mainstream classrooms was identified part way through the project. Therefore the project was widened to include them in training.
