Capital Classics

Increasing access to Classics subjects in London schools with limited provision.

Improving access to Classics

Run by Classics for All, the project broadened access to Classics subjects (Latin, Ancient Greek, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History) in schools in London's most deprived areas.

Teachers were trained in ancient languages, and enrichment events and activities for primary and secondary school pupils were held. It introduced Classics subjects to many schools for the first time and aimed to improve access as opposed to highlighting subject value.

Two hubs provided professional development sessions to teachers, improving subject knowledge and skills to teach Classics independently. This involved existing university-run development opportunities and a Classics enrichment programme including visits, lectures and summer activity to inspire teachers, pupils, and parents.

A teacher’s network was also established to further develop and share resources and teaching practices.

At the end of the project there was uptake in pupils choosing Classics in 7 boroughs. Pupils were seen to respond very well to the programme with some pupils considering a degree course.

I love the way that children can link this learning to so many other aspects of the curriculum!

Capital Classics was awarded further funding through the Subject Knowledge Hubs programme.
