Helping businesses reduce food waste
FoodSave supported over 200 food organisations in London to prevent food waste and put surplus food to good use.
FoodSave
It follows the Food Waste Pyramid to first help businesses reduce their food waste. Any surplus food can then go to feed people in need. Food unfit for human consumption can be used for livestock, where legally possible. Where food waste can’t be avoided or redistributed, FoodSave encourages businesses to get it collected for composting or to make energy. This helps make sure the food waste doesn't go to landfill.
What has FoodSave achieved?
From November 2013 to By March 2015 FoodSave:
- diverted over 1,000 tonnes of food waste from being sent to landfill a year
- prevented over 150 tonnes a year of food waste
- saved participating businesses a total of over £550,000 a year

About FoodSave
The project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), ReLondon, and the Mayor of London. FoodSave was supported by London Food Board and delivered in partnership with the Sustainable Restaurant Association and Sustain.
Hospitality and Food Service Agreement
The Mayor supports WRAP’s voluntary Hospitality and Food Service Agreement (HaFSA). This aims to reduce food waste and associated packaging in the hospitality and food service sector by offering businesses support. We encourage FoodSave businesses to sign up to the agreement and take the opportunity to continue reducing food and packaging waste. Find out more on the WRAP website or email [email protected].
