Mayor's Statement on the announcement of easing lockdown restrictions

Created on
05 July 2021

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said -

“Given the sacrifices Londoners have made over the last 16 months, it will be a huge relief that we remain on track to lift restrictions on 19th July. For London’s cultural, hospitality, nightlife and retail businesses, full re-opening is absolutely essential for survival.

“However, I want to send an important message to Londoners. The rules are still in place for at least another two weeks so please continue to show caution when out and about. This includes continuing to wear face coverings on public transport and in indoor settings, washing your hands regularly and thoroughly, and maintaining social distancing where you can.

“The wearing of face coverings on public transport helps to reduce the spread of Covid, and crucially gives Londoners confidence to travel on the network, which is vital to our economic recovery. Further discussions are now planned with Transport for London, the Department for Transport and other transport providers before we decide our next steps.

“The vaccines are making a huge difference, protecting people against serious illness and hospitalisation, but the number of COVID cases is continuing to rise in London and across the country. The absolutely best way to reduce case numbers and make re-opening a success is for every Londoner to take the vaccine as soon as possible.”
