Making Londoners’ homes more energy efficient in an energy crisis

Energy supply
Created on
27 June 2022

Energy prices increased rapidly at the end of 2021, driven by demand for natural gas as economies emerged from the pandemic. [3] Prices then increased further following the invasion of Ukraine.

Since January 2021, Ofgem data shows that 29 energy suppliers have gone bust in the UK, who had previously served 4.3 million households. [4]

The Environment Committee will tomorrow discuss the Mayor’s efforts to improve the energy efficiency of Londoners’ homes, within the context of rising energy costs and issues around the cost of living.

Has there been a rise in demand from Londoners wanting to make energy efficiency improvements in their homes? Are there groups of Londoners who live in the most energy inefficient homes and are affected disproportionately by the cost of living crisis?

The guests are:

  • Catherine Barber, Assistant Director for Environment and Energy, Greater London Authority (GLA)
  • Chetan Lad, Interim Head of Energy, GLA
  • Cllr Rowena Champion, Transport and Environment Committee, London Councils
  • James Wilson, Energy Projects and Programmes Team Leader, Islington Council
  • Nadia Smith, Sustainable Futures Project Manager, South East London Community Energy
  • Cara Holmes, Senior Policy Adviser, Energy Team, Citizens Advice

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 28 June 2022 from 10.00am in The Chamber, at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube
