London’s changing transport needs

Tube platform
Created on
21 July 2020

London’s public transport capacity is recovering as we emerge from lockdown, and official guidance has now changed and public transport can be used by all.

Early modelling by TfL has indicated there could be more than a tenfold increase in kilometres cycled, and up to five times the amount of walking, compared to pre-COVID levels, if demand returns.[2]

How will transport in the city change for the better, in order to meet changing demands and passenger behaviour?

Tomorrow, the London Assembly Transport Committee will discuss future transport plans for London. Topics for discussion will include TfL’s Streetspace plans, including car-free zones in central London, investment in walking and cycling and progress within local boroughs.

The guests are:

  • Dr Will Norman, Walking and Cycling Commissioner
  • Alex Williams, Director of City Planning, Transport for London
  • Cllr Julian Bell, Chair, London Councils’ Transport and Environment Committee
  • Nicole Badstuber, Transport Policy and Travel Behaviour Researcher at University College London and the University of Westminster

The meeting will take place on Wednesday 22 July at 11:00am. In line with Government advice, this meeting will take place virtually.

Media and members of the public can watch the meeting live here.
