The future of the Tube

Created on
03 June 2014

This meeting took place on 4 June 2014. Read the transcript here.

How will falling public subsidies and the introduction of new technology reshape London Underground services over the next decade? What can London learn from the modernisation of underground networks in other major cities?

The London Assembly Transport Committee will tomorrow review the performance of the Tube and the quality of service it delivers to passengers.

The Committee will also investigate Transport for London’s (TfL) progress in delivering their modernisation programme Fit for the Future and the resulting proposed changes to station staffing.

The committee will question the following guests

  • Mike Brown, Managing Director of London Underground and London Rail, TfL;
  • David Waboso, Capital Programmes Director, London Underground, TfL;
  • David James, Chair of Independent Investment Programme Advisory Group (IIPAG); and
  • Richard Anderson, Managing Director of the Railway and Transport Strategy Centre, Imperial College London and Project Director of CoMET.

Chair of the Transport Committee Caroline Pidgeon AM said:

“The Tube is a vital part of London’s infrastructure that is still recovering from decades of neglect.

“As well as monitoring progress on TfL’s maintenance and renewal programmes, we are keen to explore how the Tube can be equipped to cope with the future demands of London’s growing population while improving reliability and passenger satisfaction.

“We are also looking at how other city underground systems are coping with the needs of passengers and hope we can learn from examples like the Paris Metro about how they are meeting increased demand" The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 4 June at 10am in The Chamber, City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1 2AA).

Media and the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
