Doing business in the East End

Small business owner
Created on
18 June 2018

As part of its investigation into small business the London Assembly Economy Committee will tomorrow visit the Brick Lane and Bethnal Green area for a roundtable and site visit with the East End Traders Guild.

The visit is an opportunity for members to hear first-hand from micro business owners and self-employed Londoners their concerns and suggestions on how they might be better supported.

The East End Traders guild is a structured organisation initially set up to help a family business that had been running for five generations, but was facing closure due to a rent increase. Since then it has become vocal and high profile, providing support to the businesses it represents.

There are 200 businesses in the guild.

Prospective interviewees include:

  • Krissie Nicholson, Director, East End Traders Guild
  • Paul Gardner, Gardners' Bags, Spitalfields Oldest family business (Retail)
  • Ed Saperia, Newspeak House (Tech Firm)
  • Tallie Maughn, Turning Earth (Maker Space)
  • Qusai Jafferji, Newmans Stationery (Retail)
  • Mervyn Bennet, Bancroft Garage (Industrial Use)
  • Stuart Archer and Sarah Braun, Archer & Braun (Architects)

The roundtable begins at 10:00am

The walkabout is from 11.30am – 12:45pm from Newspeak House, off Brick Lane, E2 7DG

Businesses that will be visited include: Holy Shot Coffee, Bacon Street Salvage, The Brokedown Palace and Crescent Trading
