Artists, fashion designers and skilled crafters will lose their low-cost workspaces if plans to smash a new bridge through Vittoria Wharf go ahead, Caroline Russell warned development bosses.
The creative community in Vittoria Wharf on Fish Island is at risk from London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) plans that would demolish part of the building to build a footbridge.
Caroline challenged Peter Hendy, chair of the LLDC which is in charge of the Olympic Park development, over the planned demolition today.
Green Party London Assembly Member Caroline Russell said:
Vittoria Wharf was brimming with artistic people and industries before they were turfed out by the LLDC. This kind of an energetic hub is what will support creative communities and keep London’s economy resilient.
Sweeping away low-cost workspaces for people and businesses in Fish Island is incredibly destructive. The so-called affordable workspaces being offered as a replacement are well beyond the means of these creative communities.
This demolition must be halted and the strategic hub for creative businesses saved to continue providing low-cost studio spaces.
Caroline Russell raised re-evaluating the case for both planned bridges to Fish Island in light to the Mayor’s new transport strategy and its focus on healthy neighbourhoods. [1] The original plans were drawn up in 2011 under the previous Mayor.
Campaigners working to save Vittoria Wharf say less than 10% of the space creative communities are currently using will be available at rates they can afford if the redevelopment goes ahead as planned.
