Commenting on the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities data showing 4,240 Section 21 evictions were carried out in London in 2022-23, London Assembly Labour Housing spokesperson, Sem Moema AM, said:
“The government promised to abolish no-fault evictions more than 4 years ago but have done nothing to protect renters from being forced to leave their homes.
“More than 12,000 section 21 notices have been issued during this time, leaving Londoners facing the stress, financial costs and possibility of homelessness because of this failure. This did not need to happen.
“The government’s inaction has made the private rental sector even worse for Londoners who have faced a perfect storm of rising rents, soaring bills and no-fault evictions over the past year – made worse for many by the freezing of Local Housing Allowance. Together, this has left thousands of Londoners in a catastrophic position of finding themselves unable to make ends meet.
“The Government must bring forward legislation to end section 21 notices and address the crisis in housing urgently.”
