Join our mission to end rough sleeping

We are on a mission to end rough sleeping in London by 2030.
Will you join us?
It’s shameful that the number of people forced to sleep on the streets is rising across the country, including in London, and I’m determined to do everything I can to end rough sleeping in the capital for good by 2030.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London

Since taking office, the Mayor has quadrupled City Hall’s annual rough sleeping budget from £8.45m to £36.3m. More than 17,600 people have been helped off the capital’s streets to date through mayoral-backed frontline services, with over three quarters of those helped staying off the streets for good.

But truly ending rough sleeping in London will take a united effort. From improving housing to community action, everyone has a role to play.

Key initiatives from the Mayor

  • A dedicated outreach service which rapidly responds to StreetLink referrals, ensuring people get help quickly.
  • Dedicated assessment hubs, offering intensive support and immediate safe spaces away from rough sleeping.
  • Specialist support for migrants who are sleeping rough in London, including casework and temporary accommodation solutions, to help them find a sustainable route off the streets.
  • Continuing to build more genuinely affordable homes to provide safe, secure housing for Londoners. In this way, the Mayor is addressing the root causes of rough sleeping and the broader housing crisis. In 2021-22, the construction of more council homes was started in London than in any year since the 1970s.

The impact we are making together

Josh is one of the hundreds who have been given hope and a fresh start. Discover how, together, we’re transforming lives and creating brighter futures.

Josh's story - Depaul UK

Josh, 20, from South London was living at home and working in construction.

After his job ended, he started to feel really down, which affected his relationship with his family quite dramatically. His mum told him not to go back home following a fight with his brother and Josh ended up sleeping rough on park benches for 12 weeks and his belongings were stolen one night when he was sleeping.

“I could never really forget that experience. I was scared for my life……it’s kind of rough out there.”

Eventually, he was referred to Depaul UK and offered a place to stay. The Mayor of London funds the youth hub jointly provided by Depaul UK and New Horizons, which offers 18 to 25-year-olds like Josh an immediate route off the streets.

“When I first moved in, I didn’t even pack away my clothes. I just went straight to bed. Probably the best sleep I’d had in months, to be fair”.

Depaul UK has helped Josh to find work and get a uniform for his new job working in a warehouse. He is moving forward and wants to get back into construction work. As he says: “To start being happy. To start living life again”.
