The Mayor is now completely off-course for his 2030 climate targets on transport and has no plan to increase his investment in the current term.
With Transport for London (TfL)’s own business plan indicating they lack the investment to meet the Mayor’s target for journeys made by walking, cycling and public transport, this week Caroline Russell AM asked the Mayor if he had any plans to close this gap.
The Mayor’s Transport Strategy aims to ensure eighty per cent of journeys taken in London are be made by walking, cycling and public transport by 2041. [1] Yet by the end of 2022, the Mayor had only achieved just over 60 per cent of journeys being taken without a car.
This has left him lagging far behind even though he has been advised to bring transport targets forward to 2030 to meet his climate commitments. [2]
Following the exchange, Green Party London Assembly Member Caroline Russell said:
“As his new term starts, I expected the Mayor to have a plan to ensure every junction has safe pedestrian crossings, make the TfL cycle network truly London-wide, and give every outer Londoner access to new bus routes.
“Truly radical investment and delivery are needed to hit his 2030 targets for transport, but the Mayor is stuck with just business as usual.
“Instead of the continued delays and deflections to national government, all Londoners and especially children, older and disabled people, deserve a real plan from their Mayor.”
