Unlocking housing development in London

The Mayor’s London Plan states that 52,000 new homes need to be built each year, but targets are being missed. In 2022-23, a net total of only 35,300 homes were delivered in the capital – down 10% on the previous year.

The London Assembly Planning and Regeneration Committee will tomorrow question a broad range of experts from across the housing and planning sector, including developers, to learn what barriers there are to housing development in London and how they can be overcome.

Assembly Members will ask how the London Plan could be altered to help speed up delivery of housing developments and see whether new commitments made in the Mayor’s manifesto might unlock more opportunities.

The guests from 10-11.30am are:

  • Syreeta Robinson-Gayle – Head of Affordable Housing, Barratt London
  • James Wickham – Partner, Gerald Eve
  • Jeremy Gray – Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Federation of Master Builders
  • Bernadette Marjoram – Board Member, Meridian Home Starts

The guests from 11.45am-1pm are:

  • Joanne Drew – Co-Chair, London Councils’ London Housing Directors' Group
  • Jayshree Astley – Lecturer in Town Planning, London Southbank University
  • Michael Ball – Director, Just Space

The Committee will also be launching a call for evidence in the coming weeks to seek more views on what is holding back housing development, ahead of a second meeting later this year to look into solutions to issues uncovered by the investigation.

The initial meeting will take place on Tuesday 9 July from 10am, in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
