About the event

The Mayor of London is hosting the seventh annual ceremony to mark the UNESCO Day for Remembering the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its Abolition.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Black Liberation: Our Journey to Repair’. This theme was chosen because the goal is to give people hope, liberation and justice.

We are extremely honoured to have Dr. Sasha Turner, Associate Professor of History, Johns Hopkins University, as our keynote speaker this year, alongside spoken word performances and other key speeches.

You can watch this very important ceremony online, by clicking the live stream link further below.

The event will be hosted by Dr Nathaniel Adam Tobias Coleman and Priscellia Robinson - you can read their biographies in the Community Advisory Group section further below.

The ceremony will provide an inclusive space for all people to remember the victims of the transatlantic slave trade, reflect on its legacy, honour freedom fighters and look forward to transforming the legacy of racism through progressive education.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced a shortlist of leading artists to create the Memorial to Victims of Transatlantic Slavery. The new memorial will be the first of its scale and profile in the UK and will be located in West India Quay in London Docklands – an area whose history is closely linked with transatlantic slavery.
