Trafalgar Square hosts Vaisakhi celebrations on Saturday 6 April
London’s Vaisakhi celebrations will take place in Trafalgar Square on Saturday 6 April.
Vaisakhi is the biggest festival in the Sikh calendar and celebrates Sikh and Punjabi tradition, heritage, culture and the birth of the Khalsa (modern day Sikhism).
From noon – 6pm, the celebration of Sikh and Punjabi culture and heritage will be co-hosted by DJ and presenter Tommy Sandhu and entrepreneur, disability specialist and speaker Shani Dhanda.
The programme of events includes Kirtan performances from Grewal Twins and Kirpal Singh Panesar. There’ll be demonstrations of Gatka, a Sikh Martial Art, featuring The Dhol Academy drummers.
Expert chefs will provide talks and there will be an opportunity to enjoy turban tying, film screenings, sports with the Sikh Games, and Sikh artists displaying their work.
There’s also a children’s marquee with free activities from Kiddie Sangat.
Free vegetarian treats and traditional Indian tea will be available over the course of the afternoon. The giving of free food promotes the concept of Langar with free meals served to all.
The free family event is organised by the Mayor of London and supported by the Vaisakhi Community Advisory Group.
