Managing London's parks and green spaces

Updated: 24 August 2020

Many of you stressed the importance of green spaces to Londoners’ health and wellbeing, as well as the benefits of getting community groups involved to help maintain them.

Back in May 2019, we asked you about the management of local parks and green spaces, and if you knew of any organisations or partnerships that successfully run or fund parks. Our environment team at City Hall were keen to know, as it’s vital that London’s network of parks and green spaces continue to thrive despite funding constraints.

Your views and examples, along with those from stakeholders, were shared with the London Green Spaces Commission. This commission was appointed by the Mayor to help support London boroughs and park services transform how parks services are managed and funded.

The report was published in August 2020 and calls for a centre of excellence to be established. This would champion the many benefits of high quality, accessible green spaces, share best practice and promote more inclusive use of parks. Other proposals include implementing a greenspace skills programme to develop the skills and jobs necessary to maintain our parks and green spaces.
