Since March 2021, we’ve been asking Londoners for their best ideas to improve their local area and make it even better for everyone.

Your suggestions are providing a way for communities, councils and partner organisations to see what people want to happen in their local areas– and to incorporate those into their plans for recovery.

We’ve now mapped out your ideas as well as the initiatives that local organisations have successfully submitted for funding. Use the filters on the left-hand side and click on the icons to see more details for your local area. We’ll keep you posted on how you can get involved again.

Reimagining Clapton: A Community Cycle Hub

Atlantic cod

Last activity 2 years ago

I live near off one of the busiest roads A107 (Upper Clapton Road) in Hackney. The pollution levels are very high and there is always a lot of traffic. It’s quite a dangerous area as a cyclist as there are few cycle lanes and several junctions/ roundabouts that are not currently safe on a bike. I also live in a house share with five other people- who all cycle. Hackney is one of the densely populated boroughs in London meaning there is little room for storing bikes in our homes or parking bikes on our streets. Many people in urban communities across the country also do not have access to bikes. This affects their physical and mental health, as well as the environment and their access to skills and job opportunities. The barriers preventing bike ownership include cost, culture and education. To help boost cycling and other forms of active travel I would love a community cycling hub in my area: essentially a multi-purpose bike storage facility. The hub would also offer access to bikes, repair services, and training to empower people with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to cycle more to help boost cycling amongst underrepresented groups. It would be a safe place to store bikes, rent bikes and repair bikes. It would be situated near other transport links e.g. the overground or bus stops so that you can park your bike there when travelling to other parts of the city that aren’t accessible by bike. It could also have an air pollution monitor attached to the building to monitor air quality and have a display to alert passers-by when air pollution levels are high for those with respiratory problems and other advice on how to reduce your exposure to air pollution. To compliment the cycle hub there could also be segregated Dutch style cycle lanes along the A107 similar to the ones that have been cropping up across London over the past year.

Young People future

Last activity 2 years ago

Within the education system around year 10 and year 11, students may be introduced to a career advisory who would provide different jobs and career young people may enter. Career advisory vary in how helpful they are depending on the understanding they have on different careers. Sure this is helpful, but young people still complain about how prepared they were for the future and adulthood. People who have courage to ask for help or young people who have already existing connections to people with power will automatically have an advantage giving them a better chance to succeed in the future. More things should be made compulsory, students and young people from the age of 15 (year 10) should not only have access to a career advisor but also a financial advisor, mental health advisor and others. They should also be exposed to basic training on things that are required in adulthood like: how to cook, wash clothes, make a CV, how to communicate with others and so on. People who don't develop these certain skills, have challenges when older and must learn things first hand. This would slow young people down in allowing them to reach there potential from an earlier age be successful in the future. Young people, must be exposed to more from a younger age to prepare them for the future and give them the best chance of being and adult and living a comfortable life not worrying about the future.

London recovery

With the current virus being spread it is about time we have more open places where gym is more accessible and free for the public. More outdoor leisure centres need to be open to get everybody back into shape, The aim is for everyone to be proud of who they are and to feel comfortable with themselves. Old buildings that are under constructions should be for the youth and provide them with opportunities a better place for the youth can make a safer place to learn and grown. It is important to take care of our environment so I would personally suggest that we have trees planted and more areas where pets and families could attend to, with fountains and statues made out of wood this can also become a tourist attraction, The more attraction a place gets the more busier the place will be so then shops can be opened and kids aged 15+ can attend to get an apprenticeship. This will be good for the youth since they will have something to do and to keep them busy from mixing in with the wrong crowd. Better housing and more houses being built is a must because a HOME is where people start to learn all sorts of things, many people are facing homelessness so this is a high recommendation that old abandoned buildings are being used to help those who are seeking for a home. a happy community the less violence there will be.

Letting young people from my area to start having work experiences in big brand workplaces such banks, real estate and office work. What this dose is to make young people think about working hard to make the work experience there did a full-time job for them in the future. That’s something we need to do for youth in my area, to have experience in nice area where they are away from the area.

Market Share

I would also like to see, as exercised in Crystal Palace Park, an opportunity for local businesses who are suffering from the pandemic to set up market stalls once a week minimum up and down their local town centres (COVID COMPLIANT ~ Enforcing safety precautions such as social distancing and hand sanitizers) - so that local businesses still get the equal opportunity to both market and supply their much appreciated products and services to the Nation. This will revive business operations and incentivise entrepreneurial ventures / business start ups as there will now be an opportunity to actually share our achievements and capabilities🌟

Community Revitalisation

In my community (Croydon), I would like to see more unused or under-utilised building facilities being offered to grassroots and community activists who do positive outworks in the community so that they can increase the amounts of outworks (e.g. workshops) done and expand the network / reach capabilities of the organisation or individual. This would allow and incentivise more individuals and grassroots to exercise positive outworks
