Together with the Met Police and specialists in health, youth services and local government, City Hall has announced plans to establish a new Violence Reduction Unit. It aims to tackle the causes of violent crime, such as poverty, mental ill-health and lack of opportunities. Alongside this, the Violent Crime Taskforce will continue its work to take knives and other weapons off the streets.

What do you think of the measures above? Do you think that it is important to bring together different services and involve communities when designing solutions to tackle violent crime?  What can Londoners, families and communities do to help prevent violence?

If local authorities are ignore the vulnerable, if police are not dealing with crimes against the most vulnerable in our society, if people are purely focused on their own needs then we have the situation we have now, if a violent offender can happily live in the same community as the victim I am unsure what I can say that will be of help. Police ignore. Local authorities ignore. Politicians ignore unless it's a great photo op.

Some display their wealth and others will want to take it. Some display their poverty and are ignored.

Reducing violent crime via allowing members of the public to handle weapons via purchases in shops or in locked places in roads, which they can use with force and open with detection of noises like firearms or noises, as well as first aid equipment and special consideration devices. As well as arming shopkeepers with self defence weapons, quick run of id to show if they are eligible and face detection in person.

We need a self defence weapon with magnetic/ wind force that averts weapons from people in this country, as violence is a problem. My idea submission.

I believe we should have a notification on our phones set up if we are near offenders or those known to the police and dealt with instead of violent crime and abuse occurring towards civilians.

My idea is a legal protection tool against knife crime and gun crime. Tracked, and technological features. Users handed these in schools etc where crime is feared/ likely. The tool is a self defence tool - it creates a shield from metal wire (or other) around the person and  they hold it, and it has a cylinder shape handle with a button activating this shield (fast and protective like if you imagine skipping how the wire forms around you). This device/ tool could have an SOS button or linking it to the police.

My next idea is for satellites to be connected to mainstreet cameras and these to be agile and adaptable/ innovative enough to be able to even peek into parks etc. to keep the public safe and help the police/ authorities further.

Hey, here's a brilliant idea, hear me out:

First, import MILLIONS of non-European people. Next, do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, to help them integrate. Preferably do this for decades, and if you're in Labour, talk about how you're "rubbing the right's noses in it". Direct quote that one.

Then, call anyone who points out problematic trends or issues or associations a "racist" to shut down debate. Better yet, draw strawman comparisons to fascists to shut down the debate further.

Next, spend BILLIONS of taxpayer Pounds on payments to these people and then let hundreds of thousands of more illegal immigrants in, who have crossed 17 safe countries to get here and paid thousands to human traffickers and many of whom have a criminal or terrorist background. Spend billions per year housing these people, all whilst under-investing in key services for the country and straining the resources even further. Complain about the NHS, but instead divery billions to housing illegal immigrants.

Best to ensure the media play a sob story about it and refer above again to shutting down debate through the use of insults.

Then, the coup de grâce, act surprised when things like crime or stabbings are a problem, and ask "OH MY, WHAT CAN WE DO?". Vote to give yourself more power and money, call anyone who dissents a racist; rinse, repeat. Ad nauseam.

Money poured into first class early years education for all. Make physical and mental health care available to everyone whenever needed. Police on the street. Local bobbies who we know. Eradicate poverty.

Excellent idea but I think we just need more police on beat to tackle crime and be more visible to deter crime as we don't see them enough

I think tackling poverty, mental ill-health and lack of opportunities, should not be the function of a crime reduction unit, but should be some of the basic functions of good local and central government. I do think tackling these issues can help to reduce violent crime, but reducing poverty, increasing opportunities for people across London and tackling the current mental health crises should be the main aim anyway, and any positive effects this has on crime rates should be seen as a positive side effect.

I worry that introducing a new 'violence reduction unit' to tackle these problems with the aim of reducing violent crime, will take away resources from other organisations which are already trying to tackle these issues. I also think that even if the 'violence reduction unit' is running successful initiatives to tackle the causes of violence mentioned above, those initiatives may be cut if they don't lead to significant reductions in violent crime. For example, if the end goal is to tackle poverty, then any initiative which decreases poverty is a success, but if the end goal is to reduce violent crime by reducing poverty, then even if an initiative is really beneficial to a lot of people in helping them avoid poverty, it would be in danger of getting cut if it couldn't also be proven to result in a reduction in violence.

Sentencing is a joke but the cause is in any cases total lack of parental control and a total lack within schools in showing the teenagers that violence does not pay

Our Criminal Justice System had been designed to protect The Establishment, not The British Public because1. The sentences meted out by benches condone criminality; 2. When most prisoners complete their sentences, they are not immediately provided with accommodation and jobs, so after suffering for some weeks, they deliberatively commit imprisonable offences in order to get back in for free accommodation + clothing + bedding + meals & teas = illicit drugs available on tap - all with no taxes. No Mayor of London can correct these anomalies; and, Parliament is not interested! Seton During.

I think it's important and reasonable to expect communities and services to work together but thats been the ideal for years and it never happens in a coherent and successful way. Maybe the criteria you have for the causes of violence is completely wrong! Poverty, poor mental health and lack of opportunities have always been around - what about drugs, drink, greed and lack of parental control and the lack of respect for authority and elders allowed and applauded? Tackle those too and you might get somewhere.

In September 2021 my husband was the victim of a completely unprovoked vicious attack in Canary Wharf . He was returning from work but ended up in hospital with
Multiple head wounds , whiplash , broken finger and severe body bruising - he required a head scan and continued treatment but worst of all he mental state was forever impaired and no longer feels confident to use public transport .Could you explain to me how a 63 year old man could be a victim of a 22 year old man , who when arrested was carrying a knife and used a knuckle duster to carry out the attack , ended up with a £150 fine and a 10 month suspended sentence - battling knife crime Mr Khan I don’t think so . It was lucky that he was knocked unconscious otherwise he may not be here to love his family . A disgrace - we loved London - now we can’t wait to move away.

We need to tackle their mindsets and the weaknesses in it, The lack of compassion they have for themselves or others and their difficulties in processing emotions.

We also need to get real about how support services are doing. Addiction services with staff carrying caseloads of 80 - 100 clients with high needs. Mental health and sickness high. But we are unable to see it because the they are private companies/charities delivering shoddy public services at our social and financial expense!

Hi catandmouse

Thank you for sharing this. We’re very sorry to read about your experience and hope that you are all OK?

The incidents you described all appear to be serious allegations of crime which should be investigated by the police.

Please see below for the advice from our colleagues at the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC):

As a victim crime, you are entitled to support from the London Victim and Witness Service (LVWS). The London Victim and Witness Service operate a specialist service for survivors of domestic abuse. We would suggest that you contact the LVWS service, provided by Victim Support, that offers free practical and emotional support from a named caseworker to help victims and witnesses cope and recover from the impact of a crime. LVWS will also be able to support you in understanding and accessing your rights and entitlements as a victim of crime. You can call their freephone on 0808 168 9291 and lines are open 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and 9am-5pm on Saturdays. You can also contact them via their website: https://www.londonvws.org.uk/ .

The Mayor and MOPAC have been actively pursuing a more robust way to protect women from serial perpetrators. Whilst we are unable to comment on the specifics of your case, as we are not an investigative body and Mayor is not involved in individual complaints, our primary concern for you is that you are able to access support for your safety, and have secure practical advice on how to obtain this. There are other agencies which you may wish to contact which provide free professional and specialist support and we have listed a few below:

You may wish to seek the advice and assistance of an independent agency, such as the Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB), and Shelter, which may be able to help you in dealing with local authorities in order for you to quickly find safe and appropriate accommodation. Further details of CAB services can be found at: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ and of Shelter’s at https://england.shelter.org.uk/ get help.

Also, if you are in public environment and need to access a safe space, you can find more information about local shops and pharmacies that are participating in the safe spaces scheme via www.uksaysnomore.org/safespaces

If you wish to make a formal complaint about the service you have received from the Metropolitan Police Service or about an officer in the Service, you can do so either online at: https://www.met.police.uk/fo/feedback/tc/thanks-and-complaints/

or by post to:

As another poster has said, the introduction presupposes causes of crime "...aims to tackle the causes of violent crime, such as poverty, mental ill-health and lack of opportunities". Correlation is not causation. It is not only dangerous, it is counterproductive to assume reasons for crime, particularly where this might fit a political ideology. Most violent crime is committed by males and many sociologists are suggesting that fatherlessness and lack of stability in the childhood home may be significant (if not the most significant) driver of violent behaviour. It is not important to '...bring together different services and involve communities when designing solutions to tackle violent crime'. It is important to understand and communicate the drivers of violent crimes, whether that is comfortable news or not. If, so example, we know that lack of economic opportunity is a driver of violent crime then we could investigate alternatives to school exclusion.

Also - it is essential that antisocial behaviour is nipped in the bud. The police waste resources on internet slights and jokes but allow small groups of people to torture dozens or hundreds of neighbours with noise pollution and antisocial behaviour. The police need to have power to readily confiscate vehicles / equipment etc and the police and councils should be aligned in this respect.

Like for you, meme, it is astonishing to me that a big deal is not being made out of an extremely strong predictor of violence: the male sex and socialization.
