In the lead up to the ‘We Are All Londoners’ event on Saturday 21 September, City Hall are hosting a special Exhibition event with socially engaged artist and photographer - Dr. Gil Mualem Doron.
Much of Gil’s work is participatory, working with marginalised communities in UK and abroad. Born in London to a mixed heritage family and having a deeply personal experience of migration, his work deals with the subject of cultural identity, nationalism, social justice and political struggles.
Examples of his artwork to be displayed during both the exhibition and the ‘We Are All Londoners’ event consists of pieces such as The New Union Flag. Re-created with fabric designs from all over the world, this piece reimagines the Union Jack, acknowledging and celebrating the various communities that have contributed to the UK’s cultural legacy.
Another extraordinary example is the London's Culturescape a six section panorama piece detailing the development of textile designs by the Huguenots who settled in East London. Migrants and their contribution to London are also celebrated by using textile designs that originate in Asia and Africa.
The exhibition will hang in City Hall’s Ramp and Cafe Area from the 18 September to 8 October 2019.
