Good Food Catford project
What is Good Food Catford?
Good Food Catford ran a funding campaign to launch a community-centred grocery store and deli which would focus on local, seasonal foods and basic goods. The store will breathe new life into Catford’s once vibrant shopping parades.
‘Good Food’ will be a social enterprise – a grocery shop and deli on a mission to do the right thing, not just make money. They want to help make the food industry fairer and more sustainable, as well as make local food affordable and accessible to everyone.
Catford has several boarded up shops at risk of being converted to flats. However, recent community surveys and consultations suggest that there’s a growing demand for a new range of independent shops on this high street.
What will Good Food Catford do?
This community store will:
- regenerate the high street by occupying and refurbishing an empty shop
- offer advice and workshops to help customers choose healthy, balanced, local food options
- create local jobs, apprenticeships and work experience in an area with high unemployment
- provide a local space for out-of-hours functions and meetings
- develop an allotment ‘veg exchange’ with Lewisham Allotments
- create a loyalty scheme so that the community benefits from local food
- sell produce grown in local community gardens
