The Grow Back Greener Fund ran from 2020 - 2023, planting trees in London's communities to provide shade while creating and enhancing green space.

The fund awarded over £4 million to 135 cross-capital, community-led projects, supporting Londoners to make the city greener, wilder and more resilient to climate change impact.

The fund prioritised projects in city areas with low tree canopy cover, where Londoners live further than a 10-minute walk from green space and are at a high climate risk.

Community projects funded

Through the fund, communities across London created and improved 33 hectares (over 1,250 tennis courts) of high-quality green space for all to enjoy, by:

  • planting 25,000 trees for shade
  • restoring rivers and planting new wetlands to improve water quality
  • installing sustainable drainage to manage flooding
  • greening streets, school grounds and housing estates
  • creating community gardens and allotments
  • creating new biodiverse wildlife habitats.

The 2022 Grow Back Greener Fund supported a further 56 projects - find out more about them and how they improved access to green space, planted trees and made London more climate resilient.
