The Business Climate Challenge provided businesses with bespoke technical support by a built environment consulting firm to reduce their energy consumption, energy bills and carbon emissions. Expert energy efficiency advisory firm WSP UK Ltd, was appointed by the GLA to lead the programme delivery unit, heading a consortium with Turner & Townsend and IO-Gen.

The technical support provided to participating businesses included a workplace audit to assess the operational efficiency of their premises and identify energy reduction opportunities, including:

  • energy uses, such as heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, hot water, IT rooms
  • building envelope, such as type of construction, insulation, glazing
  • energy management and controls e.g. BMS, HVAC controls, lighting controls
  • local energy generation
  • access to an energy management platform to visualize their energy consumption
  • a bespoke recommendation report, including ‘quick win’ energy conservation measures through to deep retrofit measures to be undertaken, energy and cost savings potential, and journey to net zero
  • a building “walk through” to discuss the report findings, recommendations, and next steps
  • follow up one-to-one calls to troubleshoot and answer questions that arise.

The programme also offered:

  • Group training sessions to upskill facilities managers, and other staff.
  • How-to-guides and webinars on topics related to energy efficiency, sustainability and clean technologies.
  • Sign-posting to relevant energy efficiency guidance and funding.
