London Borough of Culture 2022 - Lewisham
A year of celebrations in Lewisham
During its year as London Borough of Culture 2022, Lewisham built on its strong history of activism, and placed cultural activism at the heart of its programme over the year. Its events, workshops, exhibitions and more, showcased the power culture has to bring people together and make a powerful positive change in communities, both big and small.
The year also shone a light on the young people in the borough, providing them with a platform to share their voices, talents and opinions. From eco fashion shows to photography workshops, the next generation of young residents were celebrated and given space to create.
Lewisham’s year as London Borough of Culture 2022 has had a significant impact across the borough. The year has led to new partnerships and new ways of working. And with over £4 million inward investment as a result of the year, it has shown that investing in culture is investing in the local economy, in people’s wellbeing and future generations.

Highlights from 2022
In Living Memory
Delivered in partnership with Goldsmiths, In Living Memory unearthed lost or untold stories that painted a new more diverse history of the borough - as told by its residents. Its six projects explored key moments in Lewisham’s post-war past from the Great Flood of 1968 to the borough’s lost LGBTQ+ spaces.
Have a root around the archive of memories, stories and images, or you could take a stroll around one its virtual museums.
Six Lewisham legends
We Are Lewisham asked people across the borough to nominate the people who’d made a significant contribution to their communities, helping make it the vibrant borough it is today. Hundreds of nominations were sent in and after much deliberation, six Lewisham Legends were born.
Local artists then created murals in different parts of the bustling Lewisham Shopping Centre, so that their efforts are acknowledged and appreciated.
Find out who the legends are, or the next time you’re in the area, why not visit them in person.
