Night Time Strategy Guidance
In its Think Night report, the Night Time Commission recommended that:
The Mayor should produce Night Time Guidance for boroughs. This will help them develop holistic Night Time Strategies that go beyond the night time economy and cover all aspect of their town centres and other areas between 6pm and 6am.
This recommendation followed the inclusion in the new London Plan that local authorities should produce visions for their area at night. The Commission noted that only a handful of borough had strategies for their areas at night, and then only restricted to the traditional night time economy. The Night Time Borough Champions Network also noted a need for additional support from the Mayor.
Developing a Night Time Strategy
The GLA commissioned Publica to create the most ambitious night time guidance produced by any city in the world. It sets out the many benefits for councils, communities and businesses, of creating diverse and inclusive night time plans together, with step-by-step guides and case studies from across the globe on how this can be achieved.
The guidance falls into two parts:
- Part One: Guidance on Process
- Part Two: Guidance, precedents and case studies
We've also produced some additional short 'tips sheets' on different aspects of strategy development.
Recovery from COVID-19
The pandemic had a significant impact on London, especially on night time industries and communities.
Alongside the main guidance, we also created a document that offers local authorities ways to help night time businesses recover from COVID-19. This special guidance explored national and international examples of the ways businesses had been able to adapt and re-open.
