The excellent work of the capital’s schools to support the wellbeing of their pupils has today been celebrated at City Hall.
As part of the Mayor of London’s Healthy Schools London programme, representatives from 130 schools came to City Hall to receive awards for their work to promote healthy eating, physical activity, emotional health and wellbeing, and personal, social and health education.
The ceremony welcomed headteachers and education and health leaders from award-winning schools. As well as award presentations, the ceremony also included speeches from NHS doctor and TV presenter Dr Ranj Singh, Andrew Pembrooke from Teach SRE, and a number of schools across the capital WHICH shared their best practice.
Evidence shows that pupils with better health and wellbeing are likely to achieve better academically, and that’s why the Mayor’s Healthy Schools programme encourages schools to promote healthy eating throughout the school day, increase opportunities for physical activity, promote emotional health and wellbeing, and empowering children to make decisions about their health.
The awards scheme, funded by the Mayor, is to support and recognise the importance of work in schools to promote pupil health. There are now 2,019 schools across the capital registered on the scheme, with 1,140 schools receiving a bronze award, 565 achieving silver and 202 reaching gold standard.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m determined that London’s children have the opportunity to lead a happy and healthy life. Their wellbeing is vital to building a healthier future for London and we know that schools play such a key role in their development. These award-winning schools are doing a wonderful job of promoting the importance of good health and active lifestyles, and I encourage others to follow their example and join our Healthy Schools London programme.”
Deputy Mayor for Education and Childcare, Joanne McCartney, said: “We’re working hard to build a healthier future for our capital and know the significant difference that good health and wellbeing can have on children’s development. There is a lot of terrific work going on in our schools to support pupils and through our Healthy Schools London programme we are helping put an even greater focus on the benefits of good mental health. Through this we can help children develop positive relationships, resilience and make their own healthy decisions, and I’m delighted that so many schools are embracing the benefits of this.”
Dr Ranj Singh, children’s TV doctor, said: “There’s no doubt how important good health is to our children. A happy and healthy child has been show to perform better academically and schools can play such a key role in their development. I’d like to congratulate all those involved for the great work they are doing to set a great example and improve the health of children.”
Last year the Mayor launched Thrive LDN, a new movement to improve mental health and well-being across the capital. With more than two million Londoners experiencing mental health problems every year, Sadiq has joined forces with more than 200 experts, voluntary, public and private organisations, clinicians and academics to spearhead a city-wide campaign that will support Londoners to lead healthier, happier lives.
Notes to editors
Healthy Schools London is the awards scheme set up and funded by the Mayor of London, which supports and recognises school achievements in pupil health and wellbeing.
The programme supports London’s schools to provide an environment and culture that helps their pupils grow up to be healthy, happy and learn.
There is a range of support and best practice that supports schools as they work towards three levels of awards, with a network of local coordinators, and a range of resources, tools and advice provided through a website and regular workshops for schools.
To achieve the awards the schools need to implement programmes of activity with their pupils and staff that cover healthy eating, physical activity and mental health
