Responding to the Prime Minister’s announcement on the lifting of COVID-19 health measures in England, Caroline Russell AM, Chair of the London Assembly Health Committee, said:

“Last month, London’s Public Health Regional Director Professor Kevin Fenton CBE told the London Assembly Health Committee that it was important to think about what everyday measures we want to put in place as we learn to live with COVID-19.

“Continuing to track case rates and monitor for new variants will be essential as we move to a new era of the pandemic. The retention of the Office for National Statistics surveillance programme is welcome and will be vital in understanding and detecting future waves of the virus.

“Londoners have learnt how to keep each other safe during the pandemic – ensuring good ventilation, wearing masks in crowded, indoor spaces, and exercising caution when feeling unwell are all things we can continue with.

“Lastly, we want to remind Londoners that it is never too late to come forward for the first, second, or booster dose of the vaccine. With all remaining health measures lifted, a wall of immunity is our best defence against COVID-19.”
