Policing and fire – what’s the score?

Police officers walking on the street
Created on
08 December 2021
  • The Government are funding an extra 6,000 additional police officers across England and Wales for 2022-23. The Metropolitan Police has assumed it will receive 3,287 of the 6,000. Experience from previous years makes this look unlikely.
  • The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) projects to have a £132 million structural budget gap by 2024-25, so how will the budget be balanced given the scale of the deficit?

The London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee will tomorrow question representatives from MOPAC and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and the London Fire Brigade (LFB) on their Budgets for 2022-23.

The London Fire Commissioner forecasts an £8.8 million budget deficit in 2023-24, which is expected to be funded by reserves and has conceded that it needs to make further savings in future years. No concrete savings plans have been developed. Outstanding pensions costs could significantly pressure the London Fire Commissioner’s budget.

From 2pm the guests are:

  • Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime
  • Amana Humayun, Chief Finance Officer, MOPAC
  • Robin Wilkinson OBE, Chief of Corporate Services, MPS
  • Ian Percival, Finance Director, MPS
  • Enver Enver, Assistant Director of Group Finance and Performance, GLA

From 4pm (approximately) the guests are:

  • Andy Roe, Commissioner of London Fire Brigade
  • Jo Moore, Director of Corporate Services, LFB

The meeting will take place on Thursday 09 December 2021, 10.00am in G02/G03/G04, London Fire Brigade Headquarters (Union Street SE1 0LL).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend
