Olympic Park venues – gold medal or wooden spoon performance?

Major sports events
Created on
01 February 2016

This meeting took place on 2 February 2016. Read the transcript for the first section here and the second section here.

The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) originally expected the ArcelorMittal Orbit to have 350,000 visitors per year, but in 2014/15 there were just 124,000 visitors{2] and it ran at a £520k deficit.

The Aquatics Centre and Copper Box also ran at a £642k loss in the same year.[3]

Do the Olympic Park venues have a sustainable future? What difference will a new slide around the Orbit make to visitor numbers? And will the LLDC benefit financially if the Orbit starts generating a profit?

Tomorrow, the London Assembly Regeneration Committee will discuss the LLDC’s progress towards delivering a successful Olympic legacy. It will also explore the progress the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) is making towards regenerating this part of northwest London.

The first section of the meeting will focus on the work of the LLDC with:

  • David Goldstone CBE, Chief Executive, LLDC
  • Dr Paul Brickell, Executive Director of Regeneration and Community Partnerships, LLDC

The second section of the meeting will feature an update from the OPDC with:

  • Sir Edward Lister, Chairman, OPDC
  • Victoria Hills, Chief Executive, OPDC

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 2 February at 10:00am in Committee Room 5 at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
