Electoral fraud in Tower Hamlets – could it happen again?

Polling Station
Created on
06 February 2018

There were 164 allegations of electoral fraud and malpractice during the 2014 elections in Tower Hamlets.

Following the result, a petition was filed against Lutfur Rahman, alleging corrupt practices. The civil court ruled against Rahman and the election was made void, but there were no criminal prosecutions.

The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will tomorrow discuss electoral fraud in Tower Hamlets and whether the right measures are in place to prevent electoral fraud and voter malpractice happening again in the upcoming local elections.

  • Have lessons been learnt since 2014?
  • What changes have been made to election processes?
  • Will there be additional checks on postal votes?
  • Will voter cordons be set up again to stop voters being intimidated and harassed?
  • Will ID be required to vote in May?

The guests are:

  • Will Tuckley, Chief Executive, Tower Hamlets
  • Claire Bassett, Chief Executive, Electoral Commission
  • Sue Williams, Borough Commander, Tower Hamlets
  • Detective Superintendent Stuart Ryan, Metropolitan Police

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 7 February 2018 from 10:00am in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE via webcast or via YouTube
