Building and fire safety, five years on from Grenfell

Grenfell
Created on
14 June 2022

Five years after the Grenfell Tower tragedy, many Londoners still go to bed each night in homes with serious fire safety failings [1].

Although progress has been made, there are concerns as to whether the current measures are enough to deal with the scale of the building safety crisis.

The Government has introduced the Building Safety and Fire Safety Acts and announced a Fire Reform White Paper and consultation. But how will these measures protect residents from building safety defects and fires and make sure this tragedy can never happen again?

The London Assembly Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee will meet tomorrow to consider building and fire safety, following the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire.

The meeting will explore progress made in implementing the recommendations of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 1 report and inspections by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire Rescue Services (HMICFRS).

Panel 1:

  • Andy Roe, London Fire Commissioner
  • Dr Fiona Twycross, Deputy Mayor for Fire and Resilience
  • Charlie Pugsley, Assistant Commissioner for Prevention & Protection, London Fire Brigade

Panel 2:

  • Ritu Saha, Co-Founder, UK Cladding Action Group
  • Charlie Pugsley, Assistant Commissioner for Prevention & Protection, London Fire Brigade

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 15 June 2022 from 2pm, in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
