Air pollution from London’s road transport

Cars in Hackney, east London
Created on
21 February 2022
  • Approximately half of the NO2 emissions in London derive from road transport and the highest NO2 concentrations in London are located at congested roads.
  • In March 2021, the registration of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) saw a massive increase compared to 2020. Diesel vans saw an 82 per cent increase in March 2021 compared to 2020, and for petrol vans there was a twofold increase.
  • Freight accounted for 15 per cent of total vehicle miles travelled in London, and a quarter of transport-related carbon emissions.
  • With continued changes to shopping behaviour that have been exacerbated by the pandemic, the number of parcels delivered in London is expected to double by 2030.

Tomorrow, in the second of two meetings on air pollution, the Environment Committee will discuss initiatives for reducing levels of air pollution from London’s transport network, including the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), School Streets and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs).

The meeting will also discuss the impact of construction vehicles, freight and online deliveries on London’s air pollution and what the Mayor of London is doing to help reduce air pollution in these areas.

The guests are:

  • Simon Birkett, Founder and Director at Clean Air in London
  • Oliver Lord, UK Head of Clean Cities Campaign
  • Sarah Berry, Trustee Living Streets and active travel advocate
  • Christina Calderato, Director of Transport Strategy & Policy, Transport for London (TfL)
  • Dr Ian Mudway, MRC Centre for Environmental Health, Imperial College London
  • Elliot Treharne, Head of Air Quality, Greater London Authority

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 22 February 2022 from 10am. This meeting will take place virtually.

The meeting can be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube
