Economic impacts of COVID-19 on Londoners

A view of the Shard, London
Created on
03 August 2020

Prior to the implementation of the Government’s measures to restrict the spread of COVID-19, 33.07 million people were in employment across the UK. [1] As of May 2020, the number fell to 32.95 million as many sections of the economy have had to partly, or completely, cease functioning. [2]

The Economy Committee will tomorrow look at the economic impacts of COVID-19 on workers in London by exploring employee experiences throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and examining how effective existing and newly implemented Government and Mayoral support measures have been.

The guests are:

  • Rajesh Agrawal, Deputy Mayor for Business
  • Debbie Weekes-Bernard, Deputy Mayor for Social Integration, Social Mobility and Community Engagement
  • Laurie Heselden, Regional Campaigns and Policy Officer, Trades Union Congress
  • Mike Brewer, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Economist, Resolution Foundation
  • Andrew Chamberlain, Director of Policy, The Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed
  • John Macdonald, Head of Government Affairs, the Adam Smith Institute
  • Claire Jones, North West Regional Secretary and Political Officer and Acting LSE Regional Secretary and Political Officer at the Public and Commercial Services Union

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 4 August 2020 from 2pm. In line with government advice, this meeting will take place virtually.
