The Mayor's priorities on arts and culture

Mayor Sadiq Khan is determined to ensure that every Londoner can access and enjoy the extraordinary culture that the city has to offer - from museums and galleries to live music and festivals. He wants London to be a world-leading cultural capital with a flourishing night-time economy.

Culture is the DNA of our city. It enriches our society, and our economy - London's creative industries generate £42 billion a year and support one in six London jobs, while four out of five tourists say culture is the reason they choose to visit the capital.

The Mayor’s work on culture includes:

• launching the London Borough of Culture competition  
• publishing London’s first Cultural Infrastructure Plan 
• fighting to save London’s music venues and creating more workspaces for artists
• backing flagship festivals, trade events and cultural industries including:
  • the London Design Festival
  • the London Games Festival
  • the British Fashion Council
  • TV and film-making
• setting out his vision for London to be a 24-hour city to rival Berlin, Tokyo or New York
• appointing the city’s first Night Czar and the Chair of the Night-Time Commission
• participating in the World Cities Culture Forum, chaired by Deputy Mayor of Culture and the Creative Industries, Justine Simons OBE
• appointing the Cultural Leadership Board
• showcasing young musical talent with Gigs, London's biggest busking competition
• making world-class contemporary art available to all through the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.
