Biography
Stephen Greenhalgh was appointed as Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime by the Mayor on 6 June 2012 and served until 7 May 2016.
He was previously Leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council from 2006 to the end of May 2012, where he achieved a number of notable successes, including a crack-down on crime with the only New York-style 24hr Council-funded police teams in the UK, whilst cutting council tax five times. Following Stephen’s tenure, residents in Hammersmith and Fulham now pay the third lowest rate of council tax in the country and the council’s debt has fallen to below £100 million for the first time in 26 years. This has been achieved whilst satisfaction with council services climbed to all-time highs.
In May 2008 he was appointed by the Mayor to a panel overseeing an audit of City Hall finances. Soon afterwards he was asked by Eric Pickles to head up the Conservative Councils Innovation Unit to formulate the Conservative strategy for local government.
Responsibilities
Ran the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) on behalf of the Mayor, delivered his crime-fighting priorities and held the Met Police to account. The Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime (DMPC) addresses the significant budgetary challenges facing the Met and works across the criminal justice system to make London safer.
