Question

Extent of advertising for gambling and cryptocurrency

I note that the Transport for London (TfL) Advertising Annual Report for 2021-22 has been published, with details on page 17 of how you are considering restrictions on adverts for gambling and cryptocurrency. However, the summary table of advertising for different categories of product on page 19 does not list these types of adverts in a separate category. Could you provide, for each of the past five financial years, the total number of advertisements run for a) gambling, and b) cryptocurrency?

Transport for London’s (TfL) media partners do not capture these categories.

TfL does not set the categories under which advertising is classified when a booking is made; this is done by its media partners.

Creatives are not held indefinitely by TfL’s media partners, and they do not classify advertising under ‘gambling’ and ‘crypto-currencies’. This means they have to do a manual search from the list of advertisers to decide which adverts could potentially be for Gambling and Crypto products. As such this takes time and can give slightly varying results depending on how the person carrying out the search interprets the available information.
