Planting the seed for a greener London

London Urban Forest Partnership
Created on
10 January 2024

Transport for London (TfL) has set a target of a one per cent annual increase in the number of trees on the TfL network[1], but is this target ambitious enough to help London to net zero by 2030?

TfL is responsible for managing over 24,000 street trees, as well as planting new street trees, as part of its annual tree planting programme.

Tree planting can support greater biodiversity and also assist in preventing flooding, reducing the temperature of the city and reducing the level of carbon in London’s air.

But is TfL doing enough to maintain trees as well as planting enough new ones?

For the second of a two-part investigation into protecting London’s green spaces and green infrastructure, the London Assembly Environment Committee will meet tomorrow to look at how the Mayor plans to ‘green’ London’s roads.

The Committee will also investigate the Mayor’s environmental policies and any work being undertaken in these areas.

Guests at the meeting include:

  • Sam Longman, Head of Sustainability and Corporate Environment, Transport for London (TfL)
  • Deirdre Costigan, Vice Chair, Transport and Environment Committee, London Councils
  • Simon Powell, Assistant Director for Strategic Projects and Property, GLA
  • Oliver Jones, Director of Recreation, London Borough of Camden
  • Alice Roberts, Head of Green Space Campaigns, Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) London

The meeting will take place on Thursday 11 January from 10am, in The Chamber, at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
