Outer London transport – out of the loop?

A double decker London bus with the superloop roundel on the side and the word Superloop in large red letters
Created on
04 September 2023

While some outer London communities are well served by different transport networks, others have limited access to networks or have only one or two types to choose from.

In March 2023 the Mayor announced plans for the Superloop, a network of bus routes he said will expand outer London’s bus network.

Reliability on National Rail services is a key issue for outer London residents. However, reduced revenues and changes in passenger behaviour during the pandemic have led to transport operators reducing service provision.

Many train operating companies, including Southeastern Metro, Great Northern, Chiltern Railways and Greater Anglia trains have all made changes to the frequency or capacity of services, which have had negative impacts on residents.

Will the new Superloop bus network address the need for fast connections around outer London? How are Transport for London (TfL) and train operators working together to ensure trains work better for Londoners in outer boroughs?

Following the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion to outer London boroughs on 29 August, have TfL and local councils recognised any changes in journey patterns in outer London?

For the second of two meetings on outer London transport, the Transport Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss key opportunities and challenges in relation to rail provision, bus routes and active travel.

Guests include:

  • Geoff Hobbs, Director of Public Transport Service Planning, TfL
  • Cllr Nicholas Bennett JP, Executive Member for Transport, Highways and Road Safety, London Borough of Bromley
  • Cllr Deirdre Costigan, Vice-Chair London Councils, London Borough of Ealing
  • Claire Mann, Managing Director, South Western Railway
  • Steve White, Managing Director, Southeastern Railway
  • Angie Doll, Managing Director, Govia Thameslink Railway

The meeting will take place on Tuesday 5 September 2023 from 10am, in the Chamber, City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
