The Mayor has been urged to apologies to the “hundreds of thousands” of EU citizens who were wrongly fined for driving in the ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ).

This follows on from a Guardian article on the 26 January which described the incident as “possibly one of the largest data breaches in EU history”.

The London Assembly has today urged the Mayor to carry out a full investigation into the matter, and to do whatever it takes to rectify the situation, ensuring any erroneous fines are cancelled.

Neil Garratt AM, who proposed the motion, said:

“We’re calling on the Mayor to ensure there is a full investigation into how hundreds of thousands of EU citizens were wrongly fined for driving in the ULEZ.

“This has been described as possibly one of the largest data breaches in EU history.

“The Assembly today called on the Mayor to apologise to everyone who has been inconvenienced, to cancel all these fines, and to ensure this never happens again.”

The full text of the motion is:

This Assembly was very concerned to read in The Guardian on 26th January that “Hundreds of thousands of EU citizens were wrongly fined for driving in [the ULEZ].

This Assembly notes that this incident is described within the article as “possibly one of the largest data breaches in EU history”.

This Assembly urges the Mayor to ensure there is a full investigation into how this occurred as well as to do whatever it takes to rectify the situation to ensure that any erroneous fines are cancelled, no more EU citizens are fined incorrectly and, as Chair of TfL, the Mayor offers a full apology to everyone who has been inconvenienced.
