What progress has been made in the year since a damning culture review found the London Fire Brigade (LFB) to be “institutionally misogynist and racist”?
Nazir Afzal OBE’s review made 23 recommendations to the service after testimonies from 2,000 current and former members of staff found “dangerous levels of ingrained prejudice against women” and that “people of colour were frequently the target of racist abuse” [1].
Commissioner Andy Roe said there is “no place for discrimination, harassment and bullying” in London’s fire service and committed to implementing the review’s recommendations.
The London Assembly Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee will meet tomorrow to examine the impact of the Independent Culture Review on staff, how they feel about the culture of LFB one year on, and how it is measuring the impact on staff.
The guests are:
- Baroness Twycross, Deputy Mayor for Fire and Resilience
- Andy Roe, London Fire Commissioner
- Ben Selby, Assistant General Secretary, Fire Brigades Union (FBU)
- Martin Forde KC, LFB Advisory Board Independent Chair
- Gareth Cook, Regional Organiser, London, FBU
The meeting will take place on Tuesday 5 December 2023 from 10am, in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, London, E16 1ZE.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
