The impact of Brexit on London’s economy

People walking in Canary Wharf
Created on
10 January 2024

The UK voted to leave the European Union (EU) in a referendum held on 23 June 2016.

After several years of negotiation between the two, a Withdrawal Agreement was set out to establish the terms of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU.

Following a transition period, the UK left the EU single market and customs union and freedom of movement between UK and EU ended on 31 December 2020. The EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, a free trade agreement between the UK and EU, was signed on the same date.

What impact has Brexit had on London’s economy to date? Is it possible to separate the impact of Brexit from other factors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine?

The London Assembly Economy Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss this, particularly around free movement, trade and financial services.

The guests are:

  • Ben Brindle, Researcher, The Migration Observatory, University of Oxford
  • Laura Citron, CEO, London and Partners
  • Alex Conway, Assistant Director, Economic Development and Programmes, Greater London Authority (GLA)
  • Sarah Hall, 1931 Professor of Geography and Fellow of St John’s College, University of Cambridge; Deputy Director and Senior Fellow, UK in a Changing Europe
  • Dennis Novy, Professor of Economics, University of Warwick

The meeting will take place on Thursday 11 January 2024 from 2pm in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
